JERA Visits CETRI to Explore Carbon Capture and Clean Energy Innovation

By: Kathy Huang

On December 5, CETRI had the pleasure of hosting representatives from JERA Co., Inc., Japan’s largest thermal power company, thanks to support from the Government of Saskatchewan. We extend our appreciation for facilitating this connection.

The visiting team from JERA included Takehiro Suzuki, Kazuto Endo, Yutaka Iizuka, Yosuke Tsuboi, and Takashi Matsubara. The University of Regina’s hosting team included Dr. Jeff Keshen, Dr. Chris Yost, Dr. Hussameldin Ibrahim, and Dr. Gregory G. Mack.

Dr. Ibrahim, led discussions on CETRI’s advancements in solvent- and sorbent-based carbon capture and utilization technologies, as well as innovations in blue hydrogen production for low-carbon energy. These discussions highlighted applications such as blue ammonia production, which provides a practical means of storing and transporting hydrogen, and the direct use of ammonia for power generation. JERA shared their corporate background and decarbonization strategies, and both sides explored opportunities for collaboration on shared technologies and potential joint projects.

This visit highlights CETRI’s dedication to innovation as part of the University of Regina and its commitment to partnering with global leaders to advance a sustainable energy future.
